Mental Health Services
Introduction to Mental Health Services
The Ames Community School District (hereinafter referred to as Ames CSD) is dedicated to providing a safe and responsive educational environment that supports the mental health and well-being of every student. We believe that promoting mental health is essential for academic success and personal growth.
When Little Cyclones are emotionally healthy, they are better equipped to learn, engage, and succeed academically. Our comprehensive mental health services are designed to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral health needs.
Mental Health Screening
Ames CSD offers annual mental health screenings using the Revised Childhood Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) for students in grades 3-12. These screenings help identify students who may benefit from additional social and emotional support.
RCADS Information
The RCADS is a 47-item self-report tool that screens for:
- Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
- Social Phobia (SP)
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Panic Disorder (PD)
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Screening Procedures and Protocols
Screenings are conducted with parental consent. Students complete the screener at school, and those with elevated risk scores meet with clinicians such as a school social worker, school psychologist, licensed mental health therapist or other professional. Parents are notified of the results on the same day.
Consent Process
Parents must provide express written consent for their child to participate in the screening. Consent forms are available as part of the registration process.
