Brian Carico named Interim Principal at Ames High
The Ames Community School District is excited to announce Brian Carico as the Interim Principal at Ames High School. Mr. Carico is currently the Associate Principal at Ames High and will replace longtime Principal, Spence Evans, who announced earlier this semester that he accepted a position in eastern Iowa.
Over the past year, Mr. Carico has been instrumental in advancing school mental health services at Ames High and across the state. It is an area that needs attention and one that he has a true passion. Prior to serving as Associate Principal at Ames High, Mr. Carico served as the Field Experience Coordinator at Grand View University where he secured placements for practicum and student teachers. Prior to that, he served as the associate principal at Waukee Middle School, and before that building principal at Johnston Middle School. He received his Specialist in Educational Administration from Drake University, which is where he also received his Master of Science Educational Administration. He has 27 years of experience in education and has held a number of leadership positions in building level administration.
Throughout his career, Mr. Carico has demonstrated that he is excellent in developing and evaluating staff, interpreting data, and developing professional learning communities to advance student achievement. He has also had great success in creating and maintaining a positive and collaborative environment for students and staff. Additional job-related experience includes coordinating tutoring programs for students and creating staff development to help reduce achievement gaps for students. Mr. Carico is a Nationally Certified Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer, and is a Past President of Please Pass the Love Mental Health Non-Profit Foundation.
The school board approved the position on May 20, 2019, with his contract beginning July 1, 2019. As a District, we are excited to continue working with Brian and look forward to the leadership and energy that he will continue to bring to Ames High.
